In November 2024, a grant was awarded to Dr Patrick Smith at the Animal Referral Centre in Auckland to investigate chemotherapy drug residues, specifically cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin, within the homes of veterinary chemotherapy patients who have received these drugs, and veterinary staff who handle these drugs. These agents, widely used in veterinary oncology, pose potential health risks due to their cytotoxic (cell-killing) properties. Despite their common use, there is a lack of research into the extent of environmental contamination and potential exposure risks for veterinary staff and pet owners in home environments. Healthy Pets is thrilled to be able to support this research, as the findings will be crucial in determining the level of environmental contamination and the associated exposure risks. If significant residues are detected, it will highlight the need for improved health and safety measures to protect veterinary staff and pet owners. Conversely, if minimal contamination is found, it will offer reassurance regarding current handling practices.
